Research Study on Black Education in the Hill District

Share Your Story! Participate in a Research Study on Black Education in the Hill District

The purpose of this study is to better understand the work that Black families, educators, and community members have been doing to reimagine education for Black children in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh. We are looking for Black parents/familial caregivers, educational activists, teachers, and community leaders in the Hill District Neighborhood to participate in one-on-one virtual or in person interviews that will take approximately 2 to 3 hours.

If you are willing to participate, we will ask you general background questions about your experiences of schooling for your children and children in their community, both generally and during the COVID-19 pandemic; the roles of the formal educational entities (schools, district); and (c) the in-home/in-community practices and resources you forward and engage for educating Black children. All interviews will be transcribed and anonymized, and all data will be stored in a password protected computer file. Your responses may be shared with investigators conducting other research; however, this information will be shared without identifiers.

The risks associated with participation are minimal. Participation is completely voluntary, and you can stop at any time. You will receive a $100 payment card for study participation. Your participation in this study will help us to better understand improving education systems for Black children.

If you have questions about the study or you would like to participate, please contact Dr. Lori Delale-O’Connor by email at lori.delale-oconnor@pitt.edu.
